And yet studies show that nearly three-quarters of UK organisations report leadership and management skill deficits. Two-thirds of these organisations report that their senior managers lack the essential skills to perform to a high standard and 70% report that their managers lack the critical attributes for success in future roles. Too often managers are promoted as a result of their individual contribution rather than their leadership capability. Struggling to adapt to their new responsibilities they repeat what they have always done and assume that their past behaviours will prove successful in their new roles.
We recognise that different levels of leadership require different mindsets and behaviours. Developing these new mindsets and behaviours requires challenging and letting go of existing limiting beliefs and habits. It involves being able to answer why it so important to be a manager or leader right now and what it really means to be one in the current organizational context.
